Pulse Secure - Orchestrator

We designed the foundation for Orchestrator, a new, network-based, security appliance management and configuration tool.

Challenge

The Pulse Secure team was creating a new tool, Orchestrator, that would would be based on their current Pulse product. Instead of just mimicking the Pulse product and adding new capabilities product, the Pulse Secure team wanted to re-think the UX of Orchestrator from the ground up so that its usability would be significantly improved.

Our first challenge was to quickly understand the functionality that Orchestrator needed to support. The current Pulse product is a powerful network security management tool and is very complex. We then needed to distill the large amount of complex functionality into clear and straightforward concepts that would reflect the priorities and needs of the tool's target users. Given the short time period we had to tackle this project, we needed to quickly lay out a plan to focus our efforts and ensure we delivered something of value.

Approach

We did a very quick deep dive into the current Pulse product, working closely with the Pulse product team, to understand the key functionalities in Pulse and the intended vision for Orchestrator. This enabled us to identify the most important tasks the new tool needed to support, the creation and management of device configurations. We also learned that the creation of configurations in Pulse was one of the biggest sources of customer complaints. We decided to focus our efforts on designing the configuration functionality and the overall Orchestrator framework.

We used an iterative approach - we came up with design concepts, reviewed them with the product team and in-the-field users of the Pulse product, implemented changes based on their feedback and increased the scope and fidelity of the designs in the form of wireframes. We maintained regular and frequent communication (both in person and remotely) with the product team to ensure we were on the right track with the designs.
