The Weekly Echo 11/4

Got an extra hour? Why, of course you do! It's fall-back weekend in (most of) the United States, as daylight saving time draws to a close once more. Recapture the hour spring stole by diving into some of our favorite stories from the week. Over the weekend, Mona Simpson — sister of Steve Jobs — stole our hearts with her eulogy for her brother. The moving speech illuminates Jobs' role as a technology pioneer and designer, revealing the key passions that drove his work: beauty and love. Since Jobs' death last month, there's been much reflection on the breakthrough technology products he helped push to market. But sometimes, there's just as much to be learned from the stories of products that didn't quite work out. This week CNET posted The Inside Story of How Microsoft Killed Its Courier Tablet, a two-part epic of internal politics, rebellion, and the promises and pitfalls of trying to innovate inside a tech giant. We've got a soft spot for Ikea, but one story this week revealed it as more than just a magical blue box full of Swedish meatballs, post-collegiate furniture, and Allen wrenches. In Shanghai, it's where singles go to look for love. And finally: Halloween is a great chance to bring out the inner creative designer in all of us. At a neighborhood Halloween party, we encountered several costumes that made us giggle with delight:
  • Toddler James Bond — complete with martini glass
  • a Twister board
  • jellyfish
  • Maru
